I think I miss a great deal, and reading your account of the “multi-layered experience” tends to confirm that. I used to think I could train myself to read more “sensually” but I haven’t so far, so it’s not looking likely! I think there are compensations. The example I usually give is Wuthering Heights. I love that novel but I haven’t spoken to anyone else who reads it the way I do. They see something wild and untamed, I see (mainly) patterns of repetition. I’m going to try to write about that some day.
