I have never taken what self-help style psychology has used as a thought metaphor, as being literal technique.

I was really taken aback to find that I was literally trying (and failing) to picture the future, at least some of the time. I’m now trying to develop the kind of cognitive approach you describe. It means breaking ingrained habits, so it’s a slow process.
